Unfortunately I’ve experienced some recent trouble with the Open Mic List and have decided to stop doing it.
I have passed on all my materials for the List to BadSlava who runs a great website for mics around the country. The LA section is here: http://www.badslava.com/los-angeles-open-mics.htm.
Thanks for your support through the years! See you out there on the comedy scene!

Ugghhh! Gasp! Whap! Bang! Crunch! WTF?!! Hey, Bro, I’m new to stand up, 2 months!, and this calendar was like the holy grail, dead sea scrolls, mom’s chicken mole of open-mic-nights schedules! This is one wack ass situation. I felt retarded just reading updates of this sad situation. It had the high stupid drama of a telenovela…uh, kind of. Can you send me a pdf of September’s calendar? PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????? After that I’ll just take my chances and figure out the future of open mic schedules. I wrote a directed a comedy series that’s on FOD, and I do sketch comedy and monologue writing, and stand up. I’m good! But I need people like you to guide me along the way! Please help!

Sure! Anyone who wants the lastest list can email me for it for now.
Yeah – I’d LOVE a pdf of the calender too. Thank you so much! Your list is awesome – I’m very sorry someone saw fit to treat you so shabbily in the eUniverse. Guess he needs reminding there are REAL PEOPLE on the ends of these email addresses!
Thanks again! All the best

Alan,
For the past two years I’ve been directing friends and new comics I meet to your website but until now, (and I feel very bad about this) I never took the time to express my gratitude to you. It was very generous of you to take the time and put forth the effort to keep up such an accurate and useful resource. Thank you so much for doing that for as long as you did. If you don’t mind sending me the list I’d greatly appreciate it and will do my best to pass it along to others.
Thanks again, Alan. You Rock!

Thank you, Alan… for everything.
Hey Alan,
I appreciated your list. Can I have a PDF?
Thanks,
Justin Cross
Sorry that the list became more trouble than it was worth.
It was greatly appreciated while it lasted.
Could you send me the latest PDF? Maybe I’ll start caretaking it for a while.
Thanks,
Steve
it still works http://www.alanlebetkin.com/wp-content/uploads/open-mic-list/Open-Mic-List.pdf and if that stops too, you could always Google it and hit cache. Personally, I don’t think pulling it accomplishes anything, except maybe drastically lowering your web traffic. If you don’t feel like doing it anymore, then pass it off to someone else and link us there.
Yeah, you’re a genius because you know how the web works. Thanks for all the deep thoughts that I already know, for posting them anonymously, and for assuming a condescending attitude about why I should continue spending my time doing something for free that benefits everybody for nothing in return. The fact that I run an open mic list means nothing to the public at large. It doesn’t get me shows. That big yellow “Donate” button I had up the last month netted $5 (not complaining about that, and thanks to the person who donated! Just making a point). Probably the most tangible result I got was being introduced at shows as “This next guy runs an open mic list! You can find it online at flembuttersworth.com… Wait, is that still the address? What’s the address Alan?” Can’t say I’ll miss that. Oh, and it got me some guy harassing me and now threatening to sue me.
In the three years I’ve been doing it, nothing could have stopped someone from creating a competing open mic list. The reason it didn’t happen is there’s no obvious personal benefit to dedicating so much time to a thankless task.
People like you are why I’m stopping.
I’ve been using your list for a year (my entire comedic career) and I’m devastated to see it go. I keep the most recently updated print out with me at all times so I always know if there’s an open mic nearby. Thank you for the time you put into keeping us informed. I will miss The List.
Thanks Alan for keeping track of that list for so long. I remember when I moved to LA I had absolutely no idea where to start or where to go. I ended up stumbling into the HaHa Cafe and just went from there (for better or for worse). The open mic list is such a valuable resource for everyone in the scene. Thanks for passing it along to someone else and for sticking with it for as long as you did.
Bummer. Their are so many delusional and unprofessional people attracted to stand up comedy that………. well ,you know what I mean. Thanks. Thanks especially for taking the word, chuckle monkey out of my vocabulary.
thanks for everything alan. youve done a lot of good for comedy than anybody ive ever met. we all owe you one
Hey Dudes and Dudettes,
First off, thank you Alan for holding it down for so many for so long!
Secondly, there is a free midnight improv jam at the new club, Flappers in Burbank if you want to get up and play. It is Dec 3rd with free parking in the Circuit City lot.
Hope to see ya!
Liz
Hey Alan – You are so important to this community. I would gladly support a system that required paying a few dollars to access your website. It was profoundly helpful to me and so many dedicated comics hitting the open mic circuit each week. I hope you can figure out a way to bring it back that also serves you too. By the way, I think of you as a superstar, everyone knows your name, i always checked out your website, quotes, etc., so I do think it had it’s advantages for you that you may not fully realize. Since you are sending out the last pdf’s to a few of us, I’d love it as well if possible. Again, thank you for all that you have done, continue to do and I hope you’ll reconsider keeping the list!
Best wishes – Jenny B
